Anthony John Lappin, Research Professor, National University of Ireland Maynooth: "Cognitive Brain Functions, Feelings, and Switching on a Theory of Fiction: delectatio, utilitas, sublimitas"
"Empathy" as moral imperative and psychological experience has taken a central role in our understanding of "how fiction works". I will discuss the rise of empathy to take such a central role via evolutionary theory, and then revisit some evolutionary theories of fiction to re-position the role and importance of "empathy" and the nature of engagement with fiction. I'll then move on to think about the rise of literary fiction, and return to earlier phenomenological views of empathy and use these as a useful window into both fiction and the creation of the individual. At a certain point, Don Quixote will be put in charge of hunting elk.”
